Reading Response Week 7

This is in response to Katie’s Chapel’s Pulling Weeds on Your 30th Birthday. For me this poem shows the idea of the triggering subject and the discovered subject. In this poem it seems to be talking about a woman pulling up weeds and tending to her garden. However, when you continue to read you see that it could be telling about the woman’s life and the hardships she has went through. Especially when she tells how weeding next to camellias never goes well. This could speak to her thinking about her life in retrospect and thinking about avoiding a situation that did not turn out the way she wanted. I also love the use of language. My favorite line is “snowy blooms of apology”. Another bit of language I like is the comparison when she states “the flowering trees each like the breast of a bird in full plume”. For me I am intrigued by her use of language to make unlikely comparisons such as the one above. This is a skill that I want to work on. For example “their clumped roots, worked, pop like buttons is one of the odd bits of language w have discussed in class.
